With the STAR-4 Women program, we had the opportunity to visit the Toronto Tool Library Maker Space where we learned the following skills:
- How to safely operate a mitre saw
- How to safely operate a table saw
- How to safely use a belt sander
- How to use hand tools like files and chisels for finishing wood
- How to use a CNC machine to etch a logo into wood
- How to use various power tools including:
- a power drill (which I already knew how to do)
- an impact driver
- a hammer drill to drill into a (hollow) concrete block (I also knew how to do this already)
- using an SDS rotary hammer drill for more heavy-duty drilling into concrete, brick and masonry
- a brad nailer
It was a fun learning experience building a cell phone holder out of wood and learning how to use various saws and power tools.
It was also great chatting with the staff about 3D printing to build parts needed for a repair at home.
